$300 Dollar Coasters

No other time of the year is supposed to be more joy-filled than Christmas. But there is also no other time of year that can more quickly have the joy sucked out of it. Everywhere you look, people are frantic, stressed, drunk on shopping sales (and egg-nog), high on sugar, and fattened with their fifth holiday-party meal. All the while, they are stressed and miserable. Smiles are plastered on faces, but they are fake, and deep down there is an overwhelming depression and anxiety that is setting in. Now I know this may not be the case with everyone but it sure seems to be the case with many. And why?

Because we so quickly loose sight of what really matters. We loose sight of the baby.

Most of American culture would acknowledge the fact that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. But most of the culture is also willing to side-line this reality and focus on something else. Namely, gaining material possession that will wind up in a mid-summer garage sale. It's both sad and comical how we franticly fight to find the best sale for some new toy or device that will soon be used more as a coaster than whatever it was actually designed for.

What If We Focused Elsewhere?

What if we focused on something else? No. Someone else this Christmas season? What if we actually focused on the baby that was born a little over 2,000 years ago? When Jesus came into the world, everything changed. He completely changed the status quo of his day, and ultimately, through the life he lived and the death he died, he has given to every one of us who believe, the greatest gift of all.

The Only Eternal Gift

The writer of Hebrews plainly captures the greatness of the gift we have been given in Christ.

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." -Hebrews 13:5

Jesus is everlasting. He has defeated death, therefore, he will never die again. He is sitting at the right hand of the Father and he will come back for us (Acts 1:9-11).

Jesus is all satisfying. This Christmas, set your heart on Christ and be satisfied in him alone simply because he is infinitely more satisfying than anything this world could offer. He's better than the newest gadget. He's better than a pleased spouse, child, or mother-in-law. He's better than your best holiday meal. He's simply better. He will never leave you or forsake you!

Are you content with Jesus?

It's About The Baby

Christmas is all about that little baby. This reality changes everything. Think about him. Pray to him. Worship him. Rejoice in his coming to save the world and anticipate his coming once again.
