I'm currently reading a book by Kevin DeYoung called, "The Hole In Our Holiness." In chapter nine, DeYoung discusses how one of the holes in our holiness is the fact that we don't have communion with God in the various ways that he makes it available to us. One of those ways is communion with the church. Not hanging out inside of a building, but the actual people, the body of Christ. Below is DeYoung's exhortation to those of you who think you can have Jesus without his church.
The weakest Christians are those least connected to the body. And the less involved you are, the more disconnected those following you will be. The man who attempts Christianity without the church shoots himself in the foot, shoots his children in the leg, and shoots his grandchildren in the heart.
So...Do you need the church?
